PITTSBURGH, Oct. 13, 2026 — The Pittsburgh Life Sciences Alliance (PLSA) will integrate LifeX to create a combined entity that supports companies from inception through maturity. The LifeX Greenhouse investment function will be a subsidiary of PLSA. The deal closed on October 9th.
“We will always measure our success by our north stars — more jobs, more companies, and more funding in the region’s human health innovation ecosystem,” said Megan Shaw, President and CEO of thePittsburgh Life Sciences Alliance. “After careful consideration, and support from both boards, we decided combining our efforts is the best way to fulfill that mission.”
PLSA works closely with industry leaders to build the capital, talent and infrastructure to accelerate growth. This integration will bring multiple capabilities into one organization to support a comprehensive economic development strategy for the sector.
“Pittsburgh is a powerhouse in life sciences research and translating that research into successful commercial entities is a priority,” said Evan Facher, vice chancellor for innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Pittsburgh who serves on both the PLSA and LifeX boards.“PLSA has demonstrated the ability to engage and align industry, academia, and government to ensure Pittsburgh is seen as a national source of innovation and a destination for capital and talent. This integration will strengthen the entire ecosystem and ensure the region’s start-ups are front and center.”
The sector continues to be an important source of new economic activity, high wages, and employment in the region. Many of the region’s largest employers were attracted by locally developed innovation companies.
A recent analysis of Lightcast data found employment in the Pittsburgh life sciences sector grew by 10.3% from 2016 to 2025, significantly faster than regional private sector employment as a whole.Increasing the volume of high-potential start-ups and spinouts is key to that continued growth and PLSA is leading a data-driven analysis to inform future support initiatives.
“LifeX’s early stage programming and investment are an important part of our regional ecosystem,” said Shaw. “We are excited to integrate these components with our broader mission to grow the sector.”
